Rockin the Shamrock

16 Mar

What’s up Shay’Kers?!

St. Paddy’s Day is almost nigh and I’m feeling especially green myself. Unfortunately, I’ve fallen under the weather. The Luck of the Irish is not with me this year. But that doesn’t mean I can’t pass a bit o’gold on to you!

You all know I love my Shakeology! And I’m counting on it to get me through the weekend because I can’t hold down my solids. I need all the energy and nutrients I can get because I can’t just lay down in the clovers! I got STUFF to DO!

Now, as far as Shakeology goes, I am a chocolate girl, all the way and not the hugest fan of the Greenberry Flavor. However… with all the promotions from McD’s for their “Shamrock Shake,” I decided to give my little green friend another try.

The following are some recipes I pulled from the website. You know what?! They are GOOD. I particularly like SUNRISE and CREAMY BERRY FUSION.

Check these out:

Greenberry Shakeology Smoothie Recipes.

Delicious and Healthy!

Green Berry Power!

Don’t they look delicious! You’ve got a whole rainbow of fruity options to try. Every single one of these options is LESS THAN 300 Calories! Provides you will ALL your daily nutrients, probiotics, enzymes, protein, super-foods, anti-oxidants and more. Talk about a Pot o’Gold!!

Compare with Micky D’s Shamrock Shake… And, well… check out the stats:

GROSS!

I’m not gonna say anything else. You guys are smart movers and Shay’kers and can decide for yourself. If you haven’t tried Greenberry Shakeology and you would like to, please contact me, and I will HOOK YOU UP.

In the meantime… Try one of these Green Smoothie recipes from Well + Good: http://www.wellandgoodnyc.com/2012/03/16/5-green-smoothies-for-a-healthy-st-patricks-day/

OR! Share your own! Have you created your own Green Smoothie recipe? I wanna hear about it. Share it in the comments section below!

Stay Healthy. Stay Safe. Wishing you Lots of Luck this weekend!

KiwiSweat: Pop-Up Fitness

23 Jan

Friday night I come home from teaching at Flywheel and go through my usual ritual. I prep for my 3 Saturday afternoon classes, creating playlists and practicing exercises at my own barre in the living room, cook myself a delicious vegan meal and catch up with Revenge on Hulu while stretching during the all drama. Doesn’t sound too exciting but my husband works very late  and these are activities he is definitely NOT interested in so I take full pleasure and enjoy in solitude. I don’t go out on Friday nights… this is my regularly scheduled ME time.

I spend a few minutes on social media before heading off to bed and I catch this tweet from Kiwi Sweat:

I quickly respond and the conversation follows:

Score. I LOVE TWITTER!

If you haven’t heard about KiwiSweat yet, I think you will soon. KiwiSweat creates multiple fitness “pop-up” events per month.  Each “pop-up” takes place in a unique destination in New York City and lasts between 1 day and 4 weeks.  And since New York is abundant with awe-inspiring, one-of-a-kind locations, KiwiSweat can focus 100% on content. The website tells me I can expect; “Something out of the ordinary, music I’ll love, the best instructors, and exceptional customer service.”

All of this is true.

KiwiSweat DM’s me on twitter asking for my contact info and immediately sends an email with all of the necessary info. Where to go, what to bring, what to expect.

I am pumped. I have taken Reign’s cycling classes and she is truly a unique instructor. She knows how to motivate a class by evoking just the right amount of passion and fear in her clients. You WANT to work for her. And I love kickboxing but with my heavy teaching load and other jobs… I find it difficult to get in another class. This was perfect!

Saturday morning: It’s meant to snow. I wake up at 8am to a quiet blanket of white outside my window. It’s pretty but I don’t fancy trudging around in it. I am teaching 3 classes today AND have to prep for a huge Beachbody event in Milford, MA on Sunday. AM I CRAZY? I think to myself… Well, yes. Yes I am.

I shake off my desire to hibernate and head into town, thankful that all trains are running on regular schedules (which is a rare occurrance in NYC during such whether conditions on a weekend). This weeks workout is at The Living Theatre on 21 Clinton Street. I carefully walk down the stairs and find a dark blackbox room teaming with people. There is a photographer and videographer walking around catching every moment. The energy in the room is charged, humming with positivity and excitement. I check in at the desk and the Kiwi Sweat Team greets me with, “Oh yes! You’re the tweeter.” Yep, that’s me! I sign a waiver, shed my winter weather armor and enter the theatre space.

Let me tell you something, it is totally worth it to be just a little nuts!  Reign certainly is, and I mean that as the highest compliment when I say it. Her energy is contagious. She is fierce, fearless and funny too. Her presence makes you at once excited and a little scared. You want some of what she’s got but you don’t know exactly what that is. The workout is OFF THE HOOK. Kickboxing yes… add in some african dance moves, a little capoeira flare and two live drummers and you have the recipe for not just an awesome workout but an intense and elevating experience. Oh, I can’t forget to mention that at one point they were projecting “Enter the Dragon” onto the back wall!

The drums, OH, the drums! All I have to say is I need more of this in my life. Before the last quarter of class, Reign handed out animal print bandana-scarves that “her beautiful sister made” for us and took us to the Carribian. I can’t even put this last part into words, but I’ll try. It was booty-shakin, arm-pumpin, scarf twirling goodness. I couldn’t stop smiling through the sweat dripping off my nose.

This is what fitness is all about for me. Group fitness. Environment is important, music is the key, and the energy created by the leader needs to be palpable and infectious. That’s what takes it from being just another workout to an elevated and shared experience. KiwiSweat was right to set this pop-up in a theatre… because THIS is what theatre is for! Reign took us on a journey. And for one hour a group of individuals, strangers to each other, shared a collective experience. We moved through time and space together. We sweat a lot. We had good, pure fun.

Thanks KiwiSweat for inviting me! I intend to return. And thanks to Reign for INSPIRING me and giving me the energy I needed to make it through my weekend. It’s still with me, even now.

Please, check out the Kiwi Sweat website: http://www.kiwisweat.com/

Let me know if you get into a class, I would love to meet you there!

Do you have a Kiwi Sweat or other Unique Workout Experience? I would love to hear about it. Leave a comment below.

Fitness Fridays: Eat Naked!

13 Jan
  • Marisa Miller does it. I don’t know about you but I wouldn’t mind having her incredible body or her fabulous life!
  • Christina Aguilara did it. With her ex-husband and look what’s happened since that little chapter of her life ended.
  • Margaret Floyd does it. She wrote a book a book about cooking and eating pure, un-polluted, un-proccessed foods.
  • Jaimie Oliver did it! To prove that you didn’t need to dress up ingredients or buy a load of fancy gadgets to make something really tasty. Thankfully, he was never fully nude.
  • Kids try to Eat Naked all the time. I’m telling you, I think they know what’s up.
Let’s give it a shot, shall we?
Start clothed… in some cute work-out wear. Maybe something skimpier than you’d wear to the gym? We’ll ease our way into our skivvies.
The Dish
Cauliflower Steaks with Olive Relish and Tomato Sauce.
*Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
You will Need:
1 very large head of organic cauliflower
1/2 cup pitted oil-packed black olives, thinly sliced
3 sundried tomatoes, thinly sliced
2 1/2 tsp. Olive Oil
1 tsp.  fresh lemon juce
kosher salt and ground black pepper
3 garlic cloves
2 plum tomatoes, cored and quartered
Prep it:
Remove leaves from Cauliflower keeping stem in tact. Using a large knife slice cauliflower in to 1/2inch “steaks” some florets will fall off, save these and finely chop them and place into a small bowl. Mix in olives, sun-dried tomatoes. Add 1 tsp. of olive oil and lemon juice,  season with salt and pepper.
Cook it:
Heat the other tsp of Olive Oil in a skillet and cook “steaks” until golden brown. About 2 minutes each side. Gently place them on a baking sheet and pop in the oven. Roast until tender. About 15 minutes.
While that is happening, in the same skillet, add tomatoes and sliced garlic cloves with 1/2 tsp of Olive Oil. When lightly browned, place skillet in oven and roast for 10 minutes.
10 Minute Kitchen Workout!
You Heard.
  1. Plank. 1 minute. Get down into push up position. Shoulders over wrists. One long line from top of the head to your heals. Engage abs, quads, glutes. Hold for 30 seconds. Then drop down to your forearms making sure you lower your hips. Jog your knees right and left for 10 seconds. Hold for 5. Jog for 10. Hold for 5.
  2. Jumping Jacks. 1 minute. Do as many as you can.
  3. Reverse Lunge Kick. 15 reps each side. Start with the right foot behind you. Hands on hips. Lower the right knee down toward the floor. Engage your glutes, legs at 90/90 degrees. Push off the back foot bringing your right knee forward and kick your right foot out in front of you. Don’t put it down! Carry it right back behind you into a lunge and do it again.
  4. Sumo Squat Jump. 20 reps. Start with feet wider than hips width apart. Chest up, touch fingertips down to the floor. Push off both legs and jump as high as you can. Arms up. Soft landing. Repeat.
  5. Push ups! 30 seconds. Do as many as you can. Full range!

* Rest for 30 seconds and repeat!!

Serve it up:
Towel off. Grab some water. Remove tomatoes and garlic from oven and transfer to food processor. Add salt and pepper to taste, plus any fresh herbs you have handy that you feel like adding. Maybe basil, thyme or oregano? Puree until smooth.
Pour sauce onto dish. Remove Cauliflower from the oven and place steaks on top of tomato sauce. Top with the relish you made earlier. Image

P90X Day 5: Ab Ripper

11 Jan

Heeeeyyy… Guess what?! I was supposed to do this workout AFTER total body.

Oops.

Guys… Guess what?! This Video is only 15 minutes! I don’t need ANY toys. The key is “Engagement” nice long, slow reps = Abs-a-burnin.

Love.

THE WORKOUT

1. Scissor Twist: Moderate

2. Row Your Boat: Moderate. We do this in Flybarre. It’s harder in Flybarre =)

3. Superman Banana X: Difficult. And just as fun as it sounds.

4. Oblique Roll Crunch: Difficult. And just as fun.

5. Roll V Hold: Easy. Own It.

6. Abrinome. Difficult. Funny name. Serious Ab Engagement.

7. Gate Bridge Lift. Moderate. There is a version of this in RevAbs with weights. It’s goooooood.

8. Phelon Twist. Moderate. Looks like snoozer. Feels like a bruiser. Ouch!

9. Scissor Clapper. Moderate. Heart Rate Up. Yep.

10. Tornado. Difficult. Creative. I like.

11. Balance Bike Crunch. Difficult. A classic. Slow and Clean.

I have a private client and a late night class. So this was a good one for me today. Tempted to put in another video… but I think I’ll tune into www.GaiamTV.com and do a quick Yoga session instead.

P90X2 Day 4: Total Body

9 Jan

I hate saying this… today’s video left me feeling defeated.

I don’t have a pull up bar or a place to anchor a resistance band. I need a LIGHTER set of weights (what? never thought I’d say that), no medicine balls… And the modifications were either lame or  non-existent. I am also tired and wasn’t feeling the motivation to get uber-creative and solve these problems.

The Workout:

2 circuits of the following:

1. One Arm Chest Press: I did this on the arm of my couch with 15lb weight. Good.

2. 4 Position Pull-up: Wah-Wah. I sat, sulked and watched.

3. Push-up Side Arm Balance: Hey… I’m good at these! I did 14.

4. Switch Lunge Press: This I like. My weights were a bit too heavy.

5. Warrior 3 Kickback: Great Exercise!! I had to do it with two 3lb weights in one hand. I need 8lb weights.

5. Warrior 3 Curl: Holy Cow this is Hard and I loved it.

6. Boing Push-up: I did 12 of these elevated off the arm of my couch. Looking forward to be able to do this on the floor.

7. Crunchy Lever Pull-up: Wow… I was really wishing I had a pull-up bar. This move looks wickedly hard and a whole lot of fun at the same time. I stood back and watched in amazement. My defeat momentarily glossed over by awe.

8. Mule Kick Burpee: I think I hurt myself.

9. Swimmer’s Curl Press in 1/2 Chair: Whaaaat? Yeah. Hard as it sounds.

10. Balance Kick-back on Stability ball: this took some creativity on my part and I’m not sure how effective it was but I did the exercise. At least.

11. Rocket Launcher Preacher Curl: Good.

I MISS BRETT HOEBEL!!

I find RevAbs to be infinitely more entertaining and an over-all solid workout. That’s saying a lot considering I ate, breathed and slept that work-out for so long. Nothing too fancy. Nothing you can’t do in your living room. Nothing that doesn’t make you sweat.

P90X is fun and challenging but most of the time I feel like it’s trying too hard.

I shall continue on…

Peace Out.

xxO Shay

P90X Day 3: Recover and Mobility

9 Jan

Ahhhh. This was a great video for a Sunday afternoon. I’m not gonna break this down into a million pieces. There was a lot of stretching, pressing, pulling, pushing, rolling, moving.

This is a video that most people would skip. But taking the time to keep your muscles relaxed and supple while working on basic functional training and toning is so important. It’s been a long tough week and I’ve only gotten in 3 workouts from the DVD program… but I’ve logged in 20 good sweat sessions since last Sunday. Whoah. I’ll try not to kick myself to hard.

Hoping I can really take it up a notch in the coming weeks. Anybody else out there doing a 90 day program?! Hit a Sistah UP! I am a group fitness fanatic, I work best in classrooms and on teams… so I need some accountability, for sure.

Fitness Friday

6 Jan
Hello Fit Bodies! How did your first week of 2012 go? Can you believe it’s all behind you already? I know. SO I wanna check in on you and your goals. Amongst your list of resolutions I bet you had one of these on your list;
  1. Get Fit!
  2. Lose Weight
  3. Eat Healthy

Am I right? Am I close? Of course you did! As humans we are constantly seeking improvement and so yearn to better ourselves every year. So every year we go through the same rigmorole of setting up these noble achievements to strive for only to abandon them come March in lieu of spring-time frolic and fun. Then we pull our bikini’s out in June and kick ourselves in our flabby booties muttering unpleasantries to our sorry reflections in the mirror. Mind you, only after recovering from the mild shock the that the reality of this situation induces. Will you ever stick to your New Year’s Goals? Yes!! This year is going to be different.

There are hundreds of articles and posts floating around right now from Fitness Magazines, Health Gurus and Bloggers about everything from goal setting, to meal plans to making resolutions stick. So I’m gonna through a little spice in the mix and give you a healthy dose of reality. Ready?

Whatever you have chosen to accomplish this year… you will fall of the wagon. Probably more than once. You will curse yourself and maybe your life. You will give up. You will make mistakes. You may stumble, fall and possibly make an ass of yourself.

That is ok. Guess what? Nobody said you had to be perfect. Perfect isn’t always good. In fact, perfect can be downright boring. How could you possibly measure your success if you didn’t come up against any obstacles or make any mistakes?

You are human and you are learning. You have made a bright, shiny, new decision to Shake it Up! To incorporate something new into your life, something unfamiliar, challenging and ultimately terrifying. Yeah, change is scary. It induces the fight or flight reaction deep within our core because, as human beings, we instinctively seek comfort. To really change means stepping out side of that comfort zone.

I’ll tell you something else…

You will get back up.
You will stay on track. No matter what.
You will surprise yourself.
You are stronger than you can imagine.
You will succeed.

I can’t tell you how, or what to do. There is no one “right way.” What I can do, is give you some tips and guidelines along the way. I can share my favorite workouts, meals, products and apps. I can offer motivation and support throughout your journey. Here at RSVP we can create a community and hold each other accountable. I’ll be here every Friday to lead you through it… how does that sound?

This year really WILL be different!

So, my new fierce fitness buddies… I want to leave you with a few things to think about in regards to your health, fitness and weightloss goals.

First things first: Find your WHY!
Sure you want to lose 10 pounds, you want a six pack. Who cares? Who doesn’t? WHY? Connect your goal to something real, something meaningful that drives you and gives you purpose. Something bigger than the obvious aesthetics. Dig Deep. Then Dig Deeper. Write it down and tape it to your bathroom mirror. Post pictures of what or who inspires you on your fridge. set it as your wallpaper on your computer and smart phone. Your WHY should be ever present. Get creative! Lady Gaga puts a giant diamond in her glass whenever she is drinking something to remind her that she is worthy and deserving of wealth, beauty and abundance in her life. Uh… I think it’s working.

Nobody likes a Calorie Nazi and Sober Suzy can be a downer.
Look I’ve been both of these people. And I am telling you, from experience, you will rub your friends and colleagues the wrong way if you are constantly yammering on about calories and nutritional stats, turning down invitations to dinner parties and declining every treat sent your way with a turned-up nose. While it is important and absolutely necessary for your success to set up guidelines and restrictions and make some major changes in your routine, you are going to be invited to birthdays, holiday parties, weddings and work events that could potentially derail your diet if you lack a good amount of will power. But don’t cut off your social life! The whole reason you are doing this to enrich your life, so you can live a better life. Not so you can become a martyr and a hermit. Just don’t talk about your diet, or how fattening the hor d’oeuvres in your best friends hand is. Check the menu before you get to the party or restaurant, chose an option that fits into your plan, stick to your decision and don’t make a big deal about it. If someone offers to buy you a drink, and you’ve cut out alcohol, say thank you and ask for a selzter with lime. If they question you, casually remark that you are cutting down, or you may choose have a drink later. And if you eat a cookie… you better enjoy it. Because if you don’t, you’ll eat 20 more by the end of the week. You haven’t failed. You just ate a cookie. Work a little harder tomorrow.

Your Loved Ones Like You Just the Way You Are
They do. They really do. Fat, thin, tall, short, curly, straight, it doesn’t matter. They know you for who you are. And they do not want you to change. This sounds nice doesn’t it? … but remember when I told you that people seek comfort and that change is scary?! Well, it’s hard to be the one that’s changing, but it’s also scary and uncomfortable for those who are witnessing your transformation. This is quite possibly one of the most difficult challenges when you set out on the path towards self-improvement… and change. People will question you, test you, try to derail you. They’ll be thinking: “Why is she doing this? Who will he become? Will I still matter?” And then even more deep-seeded issues come up for them: “I wish I could do that. I wonder if she’s judging me. Does he think he’s better than us?”

Some of your friends will get angry and even jealous. Your parents will be so confused. You are eating differently and you are making strange new choices. You might become unavailable at times when you would usually be free because you have carved out “You Time” to work out or take a class. Some activities, like bar-hopping and pizza night, will become off-limits and eventually no longer be of any interest to you. Everyone around you will seemingly be freaking out. Because they don’t like change. And they’ll make it hard on you because they love you so much the way you are and also because deep down, they know how good it is for you, how difficult the journey must be and how much they wish they could do the same.

Stick to it. Be the change. You might inspire someone close to you. Or even a whole community! While, inside you may be in overhaul-construction zone mode, just try to be just as “normal” and present for your loved ones on the outside. They will adjust much better to the slow reveal.

Accountability is Key.
Ok, ok, I know I sound like I’m saying you should keep everything to yourself. BUT you need a partner, a buddy, a pal. Preferably someone who is going through the same things you are. Someone you trust, respect, who challenges and supports you and will hold you accountable to your goals. This might mean actively seeking out a new friend. Scary?!  How about exciting!! Your resolution, your brand new, shiny decision is going to open up a whole new world of possibilties to try new things and make new friends. This is one of the best parts. While all your loved ones look on through one narrow eye in silent worry, these new commrads will accept you as your are, right now. They totally understand and they don’t know you any differently. These are the people you can count calories and reps with. Embrace them. Everyone else will be there when you come out on the other side. Your life will be richer and more diverse. I promise.

Some places to look for support:
  1. Team Beachbody – Jey, Caley and I are all Beachbody Coaches and this has created an immense an invaluable network of accountability, inspiration and support for us. If you are interested in joining this community send us a message and one of us will get back to you to talk about it one on one.
  2. My Fitness Pal App – Jey swears by this little bugger. I just started using it and I will weigh-in on what I think by the end of the month. Check it out, it’s free! Add us as friends!! We can see if you met your caloric goal and how much you worked out. Talk about motiviation! I definitely do not want Jey seeing that I went 500 calories over my daily limit on a Friday night.
  3. RSVP – Duh. We are all here for you! Email us with questions. Post your story. Tweet us. Find us on Facebook! As Jey says “Your life is limitless when you share and shine.” And it’s true.
Do you have any tips on how to find support? Questions about overcoming obsticles? A success story to share? Post it here. I would love to hear from you!

Cheers to your Health!
